Volunteer Sailing Crew SignUp

Volunteer Sailing Crew SignUp – we’re looking for new volunteers to join our training for next season.

Every year Pilgrim undertakes about 50 passages to sea. In 2022 this includes Day Sails, Weekends, Short Breaks and Holidays as well as a long private charter. We cruise the coasts of Devon, Dorset and Cornwall as well as going to the Isles of Scilly, the Channel Islands and on occasions perhaps to  the French Coast. We sail from April to the end of October following training sessions in March and April

Pilgrim of Brixham BM45 is a 126 year fully restored heritage sailing trawler. Launched in 1895, she is traditional above decks and contemporary below decks. We have a full-time professional skipper and a seasonal mate. The rest of the crew are volunteers who must also be members of the our charitable Foundation (see below). Typically, we sail with a crew of five and up to ten guests. The crew sail the boat with help from the guests and act as a team to deliver first rate hospitality. This includes galley duties and cleaning and maintaining the boat. It’s hard work but it’s great fun. There’s plenty of sailing and you get to visit some amazing places. Our trips include wild swimming, barbecues ashore and all sorts of other antics.

Sailing Celebrations

Previous sailing experience is preferred but not essential. We run an annual training progamme to get volunteer crew ready for our season that commences in April 2022 and ends at the end of October. We need volunteers to be available for at least 30 days in a season and to be able to be away from home for 10 nights or more. Most of our sailings depart from Brixham in Devon and crew need to have easy access to and from the port. There is occasional scope to also sail to position the vessel out of the usual sailing season too, for instance to move the boat to a yard and back for our winter refit.

Pilgrim is owned and operated by a charitable Foundation. All our volunteers have to be members of the Foundation (£50pa) and their membership provides personal accident insurance and other benefits. While sailing, full board accommodation is provided free-of-charge. Minimum age is 18 years, no upper limit but you have to be able to hoist the sails! Accommodation is shared, open plan and we have good on board hot showers.
