Pilgrim's 125th Anniversary - 4th June 2020 In these challenging times, we won’t be having a party today celebrating the 125th anniversary of Pilgrim’s launch. It was on 4th June 1895 that our beloved Pilgrim was slipped into Brixham Harbour at Upham’s Yard. Our Members, volunteers and all our supporters should take a moment though and raise a lockdown glass (or two!) to celebrate the anniversary. Just picture that day. The Pine family would have been in their Sunday best on the harbourside. So would all the shipwrights and workers at Upham’s Yard. The sail and rope makers would have been watching as no doubt would the fishermen, the fishwives and their children. It would have been a momentous day for young Silas Pine. He was just 28 and was paying £667 to own and skipper his own boat. There were five generations of Silas Pines before him and all of his extended family were fishing folk. Imagine the pride on their faces to see their boy get his boat. Pilgrim would have been slipped without masts and had a ceremonial naming with a special burgee some twenty feet long which would have been taken home to became a family heirloom. Silas then fished for 17 years out of Brixham as her owner/skipper. When completed the deck of Pilgrim would look much as she does today. She’s minus a winch or two and we have that very much in hand to help celebrate her 125th anniversary. So send Pilgrim your best wishes at this difficult time. Behind the scenes, there is a great deal of work being done to secure her future and to get her sailing safely. More of that soon, but until we can have a party, why not celebrate anyway.
