PILGRIM FOUNDATION MEMBERSHIP

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING – Join us for our ‘Welcome Session‘ to find out more about joining the Pilgrim Team. We’ll go through a ‘year in the life of Pilgrim’ to explain what’s involved, how we work and how you can get involved. It’s at our base at The Brixham Laboratory on the harbour in Brixham 10am-1pm on Saturday 7th November. If you can’t get along we can organise an online meet up if needed or if you are not local to South Devon. Book your place – email: info@pilgrimofbrixham.org.uk

Members of our Foundation are the very lifeblood of Pilgrim. Some support us from afar and some volunteer to tackle a very wide range of jobs that are critical to Pilgrim sailing and being preserved for the nation.

Pilgrim Volunteer Team

Our members who decide to volunteer work in various groups with some members involved in just one and others in several groups. That’s your choice. We also have lots of Foundation members who are committed to supporting Pilgrim in other ways and are not necessarily volunteers.

Sailing

Pilgrim sails for a limited season each year. In addition to a Skipper and Bosun/Mate, we need volunteers to help crew the boat from May to October. Passages embrace day sails in Torbay through to extended cruises up to 14 days. Crew training starts in early Spring and everyone needs to get to the standard required to safely operate the boat and look after our guests. Crew volunteers typically have some prior sailing experience but we can also accommodate volunteers who have aptitude and are fast learners.

Maintenance

Pilgrim takes a lot of looking after and that goes on year round. In the sailing season, its running repairs and regular maintenance and in the winter it refit’s and replacement work. Our Volunteers have a broad range of specialist skills and there’s also plenty of jobs for people who just want to help out.

Events and Education

The Events team look after our public and private Open Days and host the school visits and take care of other pontoon based events. Some of these volunteers have no inclination to sail but are key to our education and preservation activities.

Administration & Fundraising

All of our Administration is done by volunteers. That includes dealing with visitors, volunteers, promotion, marketing, IT and fundraising work. We need folks who are handy with social media, photography and all sorts of other activities.

Volunteers need to be members of the Foundation. If you are interested in joining us please complete the Application Form here.

There are currently opportunities for volunteer members in the following areas:

  • Membership Administration
  • Manging our Merchandising
  • Content Creation and Editing
  • Maintenance – all trades and none!
  • Youth Sailing Programme Development
  • Funding Research and Outreach

Most of these activities are locally based in the Brixham area but some can be done at arms length with remote working. In addition, some project work may suit young people who are interested in projects to gain experience.

Our Membership ‘subs’ contribute to the cost of running our volunteer programmes, personal accident insurance and all those brews and biscuits as well! There’s also a 3 month free membership offer for volunteers to see if they enjoy being part of our the Pilgrim Team.
