September Sailing Experience
Try out adventure sailing on Pilgrim with our September Sailing Experience. Designed so you can travel down to Brixham at the end of the day on Friday and board Pilgrim that evening. There are many fabulous restaurants where you can eat that evening, or you could get local fish and chips and eat on deck! You’ll depart from the historic fishing port of Brixham the next morning for this weekend adventure. We’ll explore the coastline, bays and estuaries of South Devon. You’ll discover what exhilarating sailing on board a heritage sailing vessel is like, and also get the chance to soak up the stunning scenery. It’s an ideal way to test out your sea legs before booking a longer voyage! Pilgrim is a fully restored heritage sailing trawler, and a proud member of the UK National Historic Fleet. She was built in Brixham in 1895 at Upham’s Yard, which was located right next to where she now berths.
We depart on Saturday morning and sail off for an overnight stay at anchor or in a local harbour. A freshly cooked dinner is included together with breakfast and a light lunch on Sunday. Once everything is stowed we set off to be back by mid afternoon.
Sailing on Pilgrim – An Experience of a Lifetime
Sailing on Pilgrim is a real life adventure! You can learn how the very first trawlermen used to handle these heavy and powerful vessels. If you’d like to, you will be able to work alongside the crew to sail Pilgrim in the traditional manner, or you can relax and enjoy the sail. Either way, you’ll enjoy the modern guest facilities we have on board.
Your September Sailing Experience will start and end in Brixham at the southern end of Torbay. Brixham is known as as the ‘mother of trawling’. In this pioneering town the sailing trawler was first developed over 200 years ago. To this day, Brixham is still England’s most valuable fishing port. It is bustling now, as it was then, and the harbour is still characterised by quaint colourful fishermen’s cottages and scores of fishing boats.
Take a look at Pilgrim in full sail leaving Dartmouth here. You can find out more about life on board Pilgrim by reading our SAILING GUIDE. These are offered subject to availability on certain sailings by payment of a supplement. Contact sailing@pilgrimofbrixham.org.uk
Prices quoted are per single berth to include all meals as described below.
Where will we go?
This all depends on the wind, the weather and the tide! During this September Weekend Sail you’re likely to sail in Torbay and out into either Lyme Bay or Start Bay which surround the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This is now known as the South Devon National Landmark. From Pilgrim you will have unparalleled views of the English Riviera UNESCO Global GeoPark that stretches along Torbay’s coastline. Here you can see an amazing array of rock formations, some of these are only visible from the sea. Torbay is referred to as the English Riviera with good reason. The climate is typically mild, the sunshine record is coveted and the scenery is breathtaking. If the weather is kind, the crew delight taking guests ashore to a secluded beach, sometimes cooking supper for a real “alfresco” dining experience on a camp fire. If it’s warm enough we may even have a swim! Wherever we go, you will be able to appreciate the scenery, the wonderful wildlife and the amazing feeling of just being propelled by the wind in the sails!
