Our Brittany, Channel Islands and Paimpol Festival Holiday packs in an incredible amount. Pilgrim will cross the channel and cruise the delightful harbours, anchorages and estuaries of the North Brittany Coast. The tides and our deep draught prevent us being in the Paimpol Dock for the biennial festival this time, so we’ll plan to moor nearby and arrange a day visit to the amazing Festival du Marin Chant. Translated as a ‘Sea Shanty Festival’. The festival is all about incredible boats and fabulous music. Once again, this sea shanty festival will be dedicated to travel, to dreams and to getting away from it all. There will be more than 200 traditional boats, exhibitions and food tastings together with music across the town, the harbour and the boats.

The second part of this holiday cruise features the Channel Islands and we will seek out out favourite anchorages and harbours around the islands, like St Peter Port in Guernsey, Havre Gosselin in Sark and Bray Harbour in Alderney. The weather and tides will dictate our passages but this is one of our favourite cruising grounds for our previous guests.

Cruising on Pilgrim is a unique experience.

Not only will you have a superb sailing holiday but you will see how Victorian fishermen handled these heavy and powerful vessels. You will be able to assist the crew to sail Pilgrim in the traditional manner yet benefit from the modern guest facilities we have on board.

Pilgrim will depart on this 13 day, 12 night, cruise from her home port of Brixham at the southern end of Torbay. Throughout the trip you will be able to savour the amazing feeling of just being propelled by the wind in the sails. By the time Pilgrim arrives back in Brixham, you will have friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Those memories should include amazing wildlife, sunsets, night skies and sunrises over the ocean. Our comfy berths, wholesome food and hot showers just make it delightful as well. You will also have made two channel crossings under sail on an 1895 sailing trawler. It’s really difficult to beat!

Boarding & briefing

Guests are asked to embark at 16h00. The skipper and crew will then run through the plans for the trip, get to understand guest preferences and give the essential safety briefing. Information on finding Pilgrim and on parking and transportation arrangements are in the Sailing Guide provided and on the website.

Plan for the Trip

This all depends on the wind, the weather and the tide and guest preferences. Typically we may go along the South Devon coast to start with to gives guests a chance to get to know Pilgrim. This trip may involve some lengthy passages including overnight sailing if required . Wherever we go, we will visit historic ports and take in the spectacular scenery. Hopefully you will also see the amazing marine wildlife. Pods of dolphins often join Pilgrim on her travels. Some places may involve beach landings from an inflatable dinghy. We may also need to go into Roscoff or St Malo for immigration purposes.

Hands-on or sit back and relax

All of our guests are encouraged to help the crew sail the boat. They will show you the ropes and ask you to help. Alternatively, if you just want to enjoy the sailing and the scenery, you can sit back and leave it to others. Feedback from past guests suggests that those who get involved get the most enjoyment out of the day. Lifejackets are provided for all on board and are compulsory unless the skipper advises otherwise.

Food and beverages

Each day we will serve breakfast lunch and dinner and also timely drinks and snacks. The menu will be dictated by the fresh ingredients we can source and the weather conditions and our situation from day-to-day. Arrangements may differ for the day of the Festival visit. Guests will have the opportunity to eat ashore and soak up the atmosphere and local cuisine. Full board will resume on the return legs and on the last morning we will just serve breakfast.

What to wear and bring

Even in the height of summer it can still be cool out at sea so we suggest you bring warm layers and that all important sun hat. You should also come prepared with wet weather gear. Don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. It is important to bring sun screen to protect yourself and if you think you might need it – consider a travel sickness remedy before you set off each day- just in case.
