South Devon Day Sail

Come aboard Pilgrim for our South Devon Day Sail. You’ll depart from the historic fishing port of Brixham, we will spend the day exploring the coastline, bays and estuaries of Torbay. You’ll experience exhilarating sailing and also get the chance to soak up the stunning scenery. Pilgrim is a fully restored heritage sailing trawler, and a proud member of the UK National Historic Fleet.  She was built in Brixham in 1895 at Upham’s Yard, which was located right next to where she now berths.

Sailing on Pilgrim – An Experience of a Lifetime

Sailing on Pilgrim is a real life adventure! You can learn how the very first trawlermen used to handle these heavy and powerful vessels. If you’d like to, you will be able to work alongside the crew to sail Pilgrim in the traditional manner, or you can relax and enjoy the sail. Either way, you’ll enjoy the modern guest facilities we have on board.

Your South Devon Day Sail will start and end in Brixham at the southern end of Torbay. Brixham is known as as the ‘mother of trawling’. In this pioneering town the sailing trawler was first developed over 200 years ago. To this day, Brixham is still England’s most valuable fishing port. It is bustling now, as it was then, and the harbour is still characterised by quaint colourful fishermen’s cottages and scores of fishing boats.

Whether we stay in the bay or go further out, you will be able to appreciate the scenery, wildlife and the amazing feeling of just being propelled by the wind in the sails. There’s nothing quite like it!

Boarding & briefing

Guests are asked to embark at 10h00. The skipper and crew will then run through the plans for the day and give the essential safety briefing. Information on finding Pilgrim and on parking and transportation arrangements are in the Sailing Guide provided and on the website.

Plan for the day

This all depends on the wind, the weather and the tide. Torbay provides a delightful sheltered cruising area if needed. We may venture around Berry Head and out into Start Bay and possibly cruise round to the River Dart. Alternatively we may sail out into Lyme Bay and head for Babbacombe, Teignmouth and Dawlish.

Hands-on or sit back and relax

Our past guests frequently tell us that getting involved in helping to sail Pilgrim was of the day, so we encourage everyone to help the crew sail the boat. Don’t worry! They’ll show you the ropes and support you. Alternatively, if you just want to relax and enjoy the sailing and the scenery, you can sit back and leave it to others. Lifejackets are provided for all on board and are compulsory unless the skipper advises otherwise.

Food and beverages

You will start the day with a brew and biscuits. During the trip, we will serve a light lunch to include soft drinks and fresh fruit and before we arrive back in Brixham, we will serve afternoon tea and cake.

What to wear and bring

In late May it can still be cool out at sea so make sure you bring some warm layers. Other days it can be very hot so  bring your sun hat and don’t forget sun screen to protect yourself. You should also come prepared with wet weather gear just in case. Don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. If you think you might need it – consider a travel sickness remedy before you set off – just in case.

Something to remember your heritage sailing experience

We have a range of branded clothing and other items in available in our online shop. Why not order before you leave home and it can be available for you to collect on the boat. We love to see guests photos and share them on our social media. We’ll provide you with a QR code to upload your photos so we know we have your permission to use them.
