Trip Reference

Plymouth is undoubtedly the place to be for this week so why not hop aboard for our Pilgrim Mayflower Commemorative Event. Exactly 400 years ago, on 16th September 1620, the Mayflower sailed out of Plymouth Sound in England heading for the New World. It is fitting that Pilgrim will be there to mark this anniversary and for our guests to be able to soak up the atmosphere and the sense of history.

We will be sailing each day and will give our guests the choice of a day ashore or a day in the Sound or out at sea. There will be an opportunity each morning to go ashore and explore the city and return on board each afternoon. In the meantime Pilgrim will be sailing in the Sound and out into the English Channel.

Pilgrim is a 125 year old heritage sailing vessel and part of the UK Historic Fleet. Built as a gaff rigged ketch, she is over 75′ long and sails in the traditional manner. She was fully restored between 2009 and 2013 and is original above decks but with contemporary accommodation for 15 passengers and crew below decks. Pilgrim is certified by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency.  Guest will have the opportunity to work with the crew and help sail her. The style of sailing and the deckwork required will be comparable to that which was common in the 17th century.

Throughout this 5 day, 4 night cruise, Pilgrim will be an ideal base to participate in the commemoration. Guests will have their own comfy berth on board and will be right in the heart of Plymouth to join in as they choose. The City of Plymouth has a proud maritime history and tradition and this commemoration will showcase everything the city has to offer. Accommodation in Plymouth will be at a premium so why not book your berth and have a splendid sea view. There’s no better way to celebrate than with our Pilgrim mayflower Commemorative Event.

Information on finding Pilgrim and on parking and transportation arrangements are in the Joining Instructions and on the website.

Plan for the Trip

This is a unique event and how we operate will be centred around the guests on board. The aim is to give guests a choice each day of sailing on Pilgrim or being ashore in Plymouth. Transfers by dinghy will be provided if we are not on a walk ashore berth.

Hands-on or sit back and relax

All of our guests are encouraged to help the crew sail the boat. They will show you the ropes and ask you to help. Alternatively, if you just want to enjoy the sailing, the poignant history and the scenery, you can sit back and leave it to others. Feedback from past guests suggests that those who get involved get the most enjoyment out of the day. Lifejackets are provided for all on board and are compulsory unless the skipper advises otherwise.

Food and beverages

You will start the trip with a brew and lunchtime snack. Each day we will serve breakfast lunch and dinner and also timely drinks and snacks. The menu will be dictated by the fresh ingredients we can source and the weather conditions and our situation from day-to-day. On the last morning we will just serve breakfast.

What to wear and bring

In early autumn it can be cool out at sea so we suggest you bring some extra layers and don’t forget that all important sun hat. You should also come prepared with wet weather gear. Don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the commemorations, fabulous scenery and amazing wildlife. It is important to bring sun screen to protect yourself and if you think you might need it – consider a travel sickness remedy before you set off each day- just in case.

Momentos of your heritage sailing experience

You will be invited to select from our range of regalia clothing and other momentos before you leave home and anything you order will be available to you onboard. We will also provide you with a facility to upload your photos and share them with fellow guests. After your cruise we will award your ‘Heritage Sailing Crew Certificate’ if you have chosen to help the crew sail Pilgrim
