Trip Reference

Our Pilgrim Afternoon Taster Cruise is a great introduction to heritage vessels and to the English Riviera. Your cruise provides an afternoon ‘taster’ of traditional sailing in the sheltered waters of Torbay.

Sailing on Pilgrim is a unique and exhilarating  experience. Not only will you have a superb afternoon out sailing our 125 year old Brixham trawler, but you will see how Victorian fishermen handled these heavy and powerful vessels. You will be able to assist the crew to sail Pilgrim in the traditional manner yet benefit from the modern guest facilities we have on board.

Your sailing will start and end in the historic fishing port of Brixham at the southern end of Torbay. Brixham is often referred to as the ‘mother of trawling’ as it was at the heart of the development of the sailing trawler and is still England’s most productive fishing port to this day. It is bustling now, as it was then, and the harbour is still characterised by quaint colourful fishermen’s cottages and scores of fishing boats.

As soon as your Pilgrim Afternoon Taster Cruise gets underway, you will be able to savour the delights of Torbay. It’s known as the English Riviera with good reason. The climate is mild, the sunshine record is coveted and the scenery is breathtaking. Whether we just stay in the bay or go go a bit further out, you will be able to appreciate the scenery, wildlife and the amazing feeling of just being propelled by the wind in the sails. There’s nothing quite like it!

Boarding & briefing

Guests are asked to embark at 1.30pm so everyone can meet and be ready to begin the briefing at 1.45pm. The skipper and crew will then run through the plans for the afternoon and give the essential safety briefing. Information on finding Pilgrim and on parking and transportation arrangements are in the Joining Instructions and on the website.

Plan for the afternoon

This all depends on the wind, the weather and the tide. Torbay provides a delightful sheltered cruising area. We may venture around Berry Head and out into Start Bay. Alternatively we may sail out into Lyme Bay and head for Babbacombe.

Hands-on or sit back and relax

All of our guests are encouraged to help the crew sail the boat. They will show you the ropes and ask you to help. Alternatively, if you just want to enjoy the sailing and the scenery, you can sit back and leave it to others. Feedback from past guests suggests that those who get involved get the most enjoyment out of the day. Lifejackets are provided for all on board and are compulsory unless the skipper advises otherwise.

Food and beverages

You will start the trip with a brew and then we’ll let the lines go and head out. Before we arrive back in Brixham, we will serve a light afternoon tea. Non alcoholic drinks will be available all afternoon as required.

What to wear and bring

Even on the best of sunny days there can be a cool breeze so we suggest you bring some extra warm layers and maybe a hat. You should also come prepared with wet weather gear just in case. Don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. it is important to bring sun screen to protect yourself and if you think you might need it – consider a travel sickness remedy before you set off – just in case.

Momentos of your heritage sailing experience

You will be invited to select from our range of regalia clothing and other momentos before you leave home and anything you order will be available to you on the day. We will also provide you with a facility to upload your photos and share them with fellow guests.
