Morning Sailing Trawler Cruise

Our Morning Sailing Trawler Cruise is a great introduction to heritage vessels and to the English Riviera. You’ll be able to get up and get out there in the bay – it’s stunning. Your cruise provides a ‘real taster’ of traditional sailing in the delightfully sheltered waters of Torbay.

Sailing on Pilgrim is a unique and exhilarating  experience

Not only will you have a superb time sailing our 125 year old Brixham trawler, but you will see how Victorian fishermen handled these heavy and powerful vessels. You will be able to assist the crew to sail Pilgrim in the traditional manner yet benefit from the modern guest facilities we have on board.

Your sailing will start and end in the historic fishing port of Brixham at the southern end of Torbay. Brixham is often referred to as the ‘mother of trawling’ as it was at the heart of the development of the sailing trawler and is still England’s most productive fishing port to this day. It is bustling now, as it was then, and the harbour is still characterised by quaint colourful fishermen’s cottages and scores of fishing boats.

What will we see?

As soon as your Morning Sailing Trawler Cruise gets underway, you will pass the Brixham breakwater lighthouse and be able to savour the delights of the coastline with all the resorts spread out around you. It’s known as the English Riviera with good reason. You will see the local coves together with Broadsands and Goodrington beaches sweeping round to Paignton Pier and with vistas across to Torquay. The climate is mild, the sunshine record is coveted and the scenery is breathtaking. Whether we just stay in the bay or go a bit further out, you will be able to appreciate the scenery, wildlife and the amazing feeling of just being propelled by the wind in the sails. There’s nothing quite like it!

Take a look at Pilgrim in full sail here. You can find out more about life on board Pilgrim by reading our Sailing Guide.  This tells you all the things you’ll need to know to make the best of your time onboard. If you would like to read reviews of guest experiences on Pilgrim check them out here.

Plan for the morning

This all depends on the wind, the weather and the tide. Torbay provides a delightful sheltered cruising area. We may just cruise in the bay or venture around Berry Head and out into Start Bay. Alternatively we may sail out into Lyme Bay and head for Babbacombe.

Hands-on or sit back and relax

All of our guests are encouraged to help the crew sail the boat. They will show you the ropes and ask you to help. Alternatively, if you just want to enjoy the sailing and the scenery, you can sit back and leave it to others. Feedback from past guests suggests that those who get involved get the most enjoyment out of the day. Lifejackets are provided for all on board and are compulsory unless the skipper advises otherwise.

Food and beverages

Hot and cold drinks will be provided together with hot pasties or a similar snack. Alcoholic drinks will not be available.

What to wear and bring

Even on the best of sunny days there can be a cool breeze so we suggest you bring some extra warm layers and maybe a hat. You should also come prepared with wet weather gear just in case. Don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. it is important to bring sun screen to protect yourself and if you think you might need it – consider a travel sickness remedy before you set off – just in case.
