Trip Reference

Our Dartmouth Regatta Cruise is always a very popular trip. This 3 day 2 night trip combines traditional sailing in Start Bay with the celebrated Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. We’ll be exploring the delightful coastline of South Devon on our way round to Dartmouth. Once there, you can soak up the atmosphere by going ashore and touring all the stalls and by visiting the funfair. There’s shopping, food, music and all sorts of entertainment during Regatta week in Dartmouth. [At the time of publishing our schedule, the Regatta Programme is still to be announced but this well known event usually includes at least one Firework display.]

Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta

Our days will be spent sailing Pilgrim out of the River Dart perhaps anchoring off of Blackpool Sands or Slapton Sands and returning to the festivities in the evenings. Sailing on-board Pilgrim is a unique experience. Not only will you have a great time sailing, but you will see how Victorian fishermen handled these heavy and powerful vessels. You will be able to assist the crew to sail Pilgrim in the traditional manner yet benefit from the modern guest facilities we have on board. If you wish to stay ashore while Pilgrim is sailing, you have the added benefit of watching the riverside fun and games, rejoining Pilgrim for dinner.

Your Dartmouth Regatta Cruise will start in the historic fishing port of Brixham at the southern end of Torbay and end in delightful Dartmouth. Brixham is often referred to as the ‘mother of trawling’ as it was at the heart of the development of the sailing trawler and is still England’s most productive fishing port to this day. It is bustling now, as it was then, and the harbour is still characterised by quaint colourful fishermen’s cottages and scores of fishing boats.

Your cruise will take you along the coastline which surrounds the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The local climate is typically warm in August, the sunshine record is coveted and the scenery is breathtaking. Guests can chose how much time they spend ashore at the Regatta and how much time they spend sailing. Whatever you’ll have the amazing feeling of just being propelled by the wind in the sails. That’s really special!

Information on finding Pilgrim and on parking and transportation arrangements are in the Joining Instructions and on the website.

Plan for the Trip

As always. this depends on the wind, the weather and the tide. Our aim will be to sail out around Berry Head and into Start Bay and along the delightful South Devon coastline. We will plan to moor in Dartmouth each night so guests can visit the Regatta festivities. We will return to Brixham Friday lunchtime.

Hands-on or sit back and relax

All of our guests are encouraged to help the crew sail the boat. They will show you the ropes and ask you to help. Alternatively, if you just want to enjoy the sailing and the scenery, you can sit back and leave it to others. Feedback from past guests suggests that those who get involved get the most enjoyment out of the day. Lifejackets are provided for all on board and are compulsory unless the skipper advises otherwise.

Food and beverages

You will start the trip with a brew and lunchtime snack. Thereafter, we will serve breakfast lunch and dinner and also timely drinks and snacks. The menu will be dictated by the fresh ingredients we can source and the weather conditions and our situation from day-to-day. On the last morning we will just serve breakfast.

What to wear and bring

In Summer it can still be cool out at sea so we suggest you bring a warm top layer and don’t forget your sun hat. You should also come prepared with wet weather gear. Also, don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. It is important to bring sun screen to protect yourself and if you think you might need it – consider a travel sickness remedy before you set off each day- just in case.

Momentos of your heritage sailing experience

You will be invited to select from our range of regalia clothing and other momentos before you leave home and anything you order will be available to you onboard. These are also available from our online Shop now. We will also provide you with a facility to upload your photos and share them with fellow guests. After your cruise we will award your ‘Heritage Sailing Crew Certificate’ if you have chosen to help the crew sail Pilgrim
