Our B&B Trawler Sailing Experience is an excellent way to discover life on board a heritage sailing vessel and to the explore the stunning South Devon coastline. It’s an ideal taster to prepare for a longer voyage. We depart Saturday lunchtime and sail off for an overnight stay at anchor or in a local harbour. A freshly cooked dinner is included and a hearty breakfast on Sunday morning. Once everything is stowed we set off to be back by Sunday lunchtime.

Sailing on Pilgrim is a unique and exhilarating  experience. Not only will you have a superb experience sailing our 125 year old Brixham trawler, but you will see how Victorian fishermen handled these heavy and powerful vessels. You will be able to assist the crew to sail Pilgrim in the traditional manner yet benefit from the modern guest facilities we have on board.

Your B&B Trawler Sailing Experience will start and end in the historic fishing port of Brixham at the southern end of Torbay. Brixham is often referred to as the ‘mother of trawling’ as it was at the heart of the development of the sailing trawler and is still England’s most productive fishing port to this day. It is bustling now, as it was then, and the harbour is still characterised by quaint colourful fishermen’s cottages and scores of fishing boats.

This overnight adventure will likely include Torbay, Lyme Bay and Start Bay which surround the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The climate is typically mild, the sunshine record is coveted and the scenery is breathtaking.  Wherever we go you will be able to appreciate the amazing feeling of just being propelled by the wind in the sails. It’s a unique experience, not to be missed!

Boarding & briefing

Guests are asked to embark at 11.30am so everyone can meet and be ready to begin the briefing at 11.45am. The skipper and crew will then run through the plans for the trip and give the essential safety briefing. Information on finding Pilgrim and on parking and transportation arrangements are in the Joining Instructions and on the website.

Plan for the voyage

This all depends on the wind, the weather and the tide. Torbay provides a delightful sheltered cruising area if needed. We may venture around Berry Head and out into Start Bay and possibly cruise round to the River Dart. Alternatively we may sail out into Lyme Bay and head for Babbacombe, Teignmouth and Dawlish.

Hands-on or sit back and relax

All of our guests are encouraged to help the crew sail the boat. They will show you the ropes and ask you to help. Alternatively, if you just want to enjoy the sailing and the scenery, you can sit back and leave it to others. Feedback from past guests suggests that those who get involved get the most enjoyment out of the day. Lifejackets are provided for all on board and are compulsory unless the skipper advises otherwise.

Food and beverages

You will offered a snack lunch on arrival. We will provide afternoon tea on board and  a two course dinner in the evening. The menu will be dictated by the fresh ingredients we can source and the weather conditions on the day. Non alcoholic drinks will be available all day as required. Breakfast is served before departure the next morning.

What to wear and bring

Even on the best of sunny days there can be a cool breeze so we suggest you bring some extra warm layers and maybe a hat. You should also come prepared with wet weather gear just in case. Don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. it is important to bring sun screen to protect yourself and if you think you might need it – consider a travel sickness remedy before you set off – just in case.

Momentos of your heritage sailing experience

You will be invited to select from our range of regalia clothing and other momentos before you leave home and anything you order will be available to you on the day. We will also provide you with a facility to upload your photos and share them with fellow guests. After your cruise we will award your ‘Heritage Sailing Crew Certificate’ if you have chosen to help the crew sail Pilgrim
