Autumn Short Sailing Break

Come aboard Pilgrim for our Autumn Short Sailing Break. You’ll depart from the historic fishing port of Brixham for this weekend adventure, we will spend the 3 days exploring the coastline, bays and estuaries of South Devon. You’ll experience exhilarating sailing and also get the chance to soak up the stunning scenery. Pilgrim is a fully restored heritage sailing trawler, and a proud member of the UK National Historic Fleet.  She was built in Brixham in 1895 at Upham’s Yard, which was located right next to where she now berths.

Sailing on Pilgrim – An Experience of a Lifetime

Sailing on Pilgrim is a real life adventure! You can learn how the very first trawlermen used to handle these heavy and powerful vessels. If you’d like to, you will be able to work alongside the crew to sail Pilgrim in the traditional manner, or you can relax and enjoy the sail. Either way, you’ll enjoy the modern guest facilities we have on board.

Your Autumn Short Sailing Break will start and end in Brixham at the southern end of Torbay. Brixham is known as as the ‘mother of trawling’. In this pioneering town the sailing trawler was first developed over 200 years ago. To this day, Brixham is still England’s most valuable fishing port. It is bustling now, as it was then, and the harbour is still characterised by quaint colourful fishermen’s cottages and scores of fishing boats.

Take a look at Pilgrim in full sail leaving Dartmouth here. You can find out more about life on board Pilgrim by reading our SAILING GUIDE.  This tells you all the practical things you’ll need to know to make the best of your time onboard. If you would like to read reviews of guest experiences on Pilgrim check them out here.

Accommodation is arranged in two shared sleeping areas, one of six berths and the other of four berths. Our bunks are wide and comfortable! There’s very little storage onboard though so pack light and into a soft holdall. For more room or even your own ‘en-suite facilities’ please enquire by email. These are offered subject to availability on certain sailings by payment of a supplement.  Contact sailing@pilgrimofbrixham.org.uk

Prices quoted are per single berth to include all meals as described below.

Where will we go?

This all depends on the wind, the weather and the tide! During this 3 day Autumn Short Sailing Break you’ll sail in Torbay and in Lyme Bay and Start Bay which surround the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). From Pilgrim you will have unparalleled views of the UNESCO GeoPark that stretches along Torbay’s coastline. Here you can see an amazing array of rock formations, some of these are only visible from the sea. Torbay is referred to as the English Riviera with good reason. The climate is typically mild, the sunshine record is coveted and the scenery is breathtaking. We will aim to visit charming historic ports like Dartmouth and perhaps Salcombe. If the weather is kind, the crew delight taking guests ashore to a secluded beach, sometimes cooking supper for a real “alfresco” dining experience on a camp fire. If it’s warm enough we may even have a swim! Wherever we go, you will be able to appreciate the scenery, the wonderful wildlife and the amazing feeling of just being propelled by the wind in the sails!

Boarding & briefing

Guests are asked to embark at 12h00. The skipper and crew will then run through the plans for the trip and give the essential safety briefing. Information on finding Pilgrim and on parking and transportation arrangements are in the Sailing Guide provided and on the website. This trip may involve embarking and disembarking Pilgrim using the water taxi in the harbour.

Plan for the voyage

This all depends on the wind, the weather and the tide. We may go east across Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coast. Alternatively we may go west towards Salcombe and Plymouth.  We will anchor in quiet coves overnight or visit local ports and harbours.

Hands-on or sit back and relax

Our past guests frequently tell us that getting involved in helping to sail Pilgrim was of the day, so we encourage everyone to help the crew sail the boat. Don’t worry! They’ll show you the ropes and support you. Alternatively, if you just want to relax and enjoy the sailing and the scenery, you can sit back and leave it to others. Lifejackets are provided for all on board and are compulsory unless the skipper advises otherwise.

Food and beverages

You will offered a snack lunch on arrival. We will provide afternoon tea on board and a two course dinner in the evening. The following day you will be served with breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu will be dictated by the fresh ingredients we can source and the weather conditions on the day. Non alcoholic drinks will be available all day as required. Breakfast is served before departure on the final morning.

What to wear and bring

In the early Autumn, it can be cool out at sea, so we suggest you bring a warm outer layer and also come prepared with wet weather gear just in case. We can have fabulous sunny days too though so bring sunglasses and a sun hat. Don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. it is important to bring sun screen to protect yourself and if you think you might need it – consider a travel sickness remedy before you set off – just in case.

Something to remember your sailing experience

We have a range of branded clothing and other items in available in our online shop. Why not order before you leave home and it can be available for you to collect on the boat. We love to see guests photos and share them on our social media. We’ll provide you with a QR code to upload your photos so we know we have your permission to use them.
