Autumn Heritage Sailing Experience

Enjoy the last of the warmer days in Devon with our Autumn Heritage Sailing Experience. You will have a day out sailing on the English Riviera on the heritage trawler Pilgrim of Brixham. It’ll be good fun and a great introduction to sailing  heritage vessels. As well as that, you will be cruising along the stunning South Devon coastline. Your sail provides a one day ‘taster’ of traditional sailing in the sheltered waters of Start Bay, Lyme Bay and Torbay. Weather and sea state permitting, we will find a lovely sheltered bay to stop for lunch and a swim in the sea if you’d like to.  Who knows, we may be lucky and see some seals or even dolphins!

Sailing on Pilgrim – An Experience of a Lifetime

Sailing on Pilgrim is a real life adventure! You can learn how the very first trawlermen used to handle these heavy and powerful vessels. If you’d like to, you will be able to work alongside the crew to sail Pilgrim in the traditional manner, or you can relax and enjoy the sail. Either way, you’ll enjoy the modern guest facilities we have on board.

Your sailing will start and end in Brixham at the southern end of Torbay. Brixham is known as as the ‘mother of trawling’. In this pioneering town the sailing trawler was first developed over 200 years ago. To this day, Brixham is still England’s most valuable fishing port. It is bustling now, as it was then, and the harbour is still characterised by quaint colourful fishermen’s cottages and scores of fishing boats.

Where will we go?

That all depends on the winds, the weather and the tides! Your Autumn Heritage Sailing Experience will take you around Torbay, known as the English Riviera. From Pilgrim you will have unparalleled views of the UNESCO GeoPark that stretches along Torbay’s coastline. Here you can see an amazing array of rock formations, some of these are only visible from the sea. The climate is mild, the sunshine record is coveted and the scenery is breathtaking. By August the sea temperature is also kind so it’s perfect for a swim off the boat! Whether we stay in the Torbay or go further out, you will be able to appreciate the scenery, wildlife and the amazing feeling of just being propelled by the wind in the sails. There’s nothing quite like it!

Take a look at Pilgrim in full sail  here. You can find out more about life on board Pilgrim by reading our Sailing Guide.  This tells you all the things you’ll need to know to make the best of your time onboard. Boarding & briefing

Guests are asked to embark at 10h00. The skipper and crew will then run through the plans for the day and give the essential safety briefing. Information on finding Pilgrim and on parking and transportation arrangements are in the Sailing Guide provided and on the website.

Plan for the day

This all depends on the wind, the weather and the tide! Torbay provides a delightful sheltered cruising area if needed. We may venture around Berry Head and out into Start Bay and possibly cruise round to the River Dart. Alternatively we may sail out into Lyme Bay and head for Babbacombe, Teignmouth and Dawlish.

Hands-on or sit back and relax

Our past guests frequently tell us that getting involved in helping to sail Pilgrim was of the day, so we encourage everyone to help the crew sail the boat. Don’t worry! They’ll show you the ropes and support you. Alternatively, if you just want to relax and enjoy the sailing and the scenery, you can sit back and leave it to others. Lifejackets are provided for all on board and are compulsory unless the skipper advises otherwise.

Food and beverages

You will start the day with a brew and biscuits. During the trip, we will serve a light lunch to include soft drinks and fresh fruit and before we arrive back in Brixham, we will serve afternoon tea and cake. Non alcoholic drinks will be available all day as required.

What to wear and bring

In Autumn, it can be cool out at sea so we make sure you bring some warm layers, although you still may need your sun hat. Don’t forget your swimsuit plus a towel and you should also come prepared with wet weather gear just in case. You will also need your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. It is important to bring sun screen to protect yourself and if you think you might need it – consider a travel sickness remedy before you set off – just in case.

Something to remember your heritage sailing experience

We have a range of branded clothing and other items in available in our online shop. Why not order before you leave home and it can be available for you to collect on the boat. We love to see guests photos and share them on our social media. We’ll provide you with a QR code to upload your photos so we know we have your permission to use them.
